Peter Volum's Kolb Mk. III

This is my baby.  It is a Kolb Mark III powered by an 80 HP Rotax 912 4 stroke liquid cooled engine and equipped with a BRS ballistic parachute.

I bought her (him?) from the "Old Kolb" during Sun-N-Fun 1999 and spent much of the next 18 months refurbishing with help from fellow LAFA member Rich Bragassa who was also responsible for the paint job. This plane used to be nicknamed "Fat Albert" when the Kolb owned it.

The pictures below show some of the work and the end result.  Modifications included the installation of removable doors, a permanent (aluminum) wing gap seal and a sound barrier behind the cockpit.  I also customized a boat trailer to make it suitable for airplane towing.

Refurbishing Fat Albert

Fat Albert was the Kolb Factory Mk. III demo plane that appears in all the company Ads and on the side of their trailer.

Wing Gap Seal

Replaced the old removable Lexan gap shield for one made from aluminum sheet.

Wing Gap Seal

Wing Gap Seal

Although a permanent installation, this gap seal still allows the wings to be easily folded for trailering. The underside becomes extra overhead panel space.

Sound Barrier

Sheet of Lexan behind the cockpit greatly reduces noise level in the cockpit.

Removable Hinge

These hinges allow for easy removal and reattachment of the doors.

Hinge in closed position

When door is in closed position, a "STOP" at the end of the door impedes the door from sliding off the hinge in flight. Door can only be removed or installed from the open position.

"Boom Box"

This removable box holds the tail boom abd supports the wing for trailering.

Trailer with Boom Box

Kolb being loaded on trailer

A winch on the trailer makes loading and unloading a one person task.

Kolb loaded

Wings must be in open position for loading and unloading.

Wheel support

This wheel cradle and ratcheting tie down holds the wheel in place during trailering. A safety hook adds back up support in case of tire deflation.

LAFA Logo

I liked our club LOGO so much I made it an integral part of the paint job.

Checkerboard tail

It took a few seconds to think of this add-on to the paint scheme but about two weeks worth of free time to actually make it a reality.
